It should come as no surprise that Putin is attacking the Ukraine, and lying to the people of Russia. His motives are clear. He is a despot, a bully, but he is worse.

Starting from his erosion of democracy in Russia and shrewd decades of thinly veiled espionage, to the information and political attacks on neighbors, “allies,” and enemies, and now to his invasions for territorial expansion. Putin plunders the world because… it’s fun. He’s having fun. This murder, destruction, and abuse is fun for Putin.

Right now, The Ukraine suffers under the weight of Putin’s self-idolatry, but also in this moment the heart of Ukraine grows as it suffers wound after wound, loss and sadness piling high to say “No longer. You will not take us. Not now. Not here.”

In a world where everyone could eat, sleep under a roof, or learn to read, too many despots say No! To food, to medicine, to decency and equitable access to dignity. This is not a world of one Putin, of one crazed self-idolator, but of many. A flood of self importance now threatens to murder children and neighbors through nothing more simple than coquettish inaction.

When looking for your humanity to save the world, please look for the humanity in the neighbor not of your choosing.
